Spend A Summer Night with WILLIE NILE and his great band when they return to the Wonder Bar, Asbury Park!

Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townsend, Lucinda Williams, Jim Jarmusch, Lou Reed and Little Steven are among those who have sung his praises. His 2013 album, American Ride, won “Best Rock Album of the Year” at the Independent Music Awards. It appeared on over one hundred year-end Top Ten lists and Bono called it, “One of the great guides to unraveling the mystery that is the troubled beauty of America.”

In November 2014, he released an album of piano-based songs, If I Was A River, to critical acclaim. “One of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of the past thirty years” said The New Yorker. No Depression raved “Willie Nile’s artistic renaissance continues unabated.”

His 2016 album World War Willie appeared on numerous year end top ten lists as did hid his live shows. As American Songwriter said, “Nile cranks up the volume and tears into these tunes with the same hunger, passion and exuberance he displays in his legendary sweat-soaked shows. World War Willie was voted “Album Of The Year” by Twangville Magazine and the song “Forever Wild” was named “Coolest Song In The World” by Little Steven’s Underground Garage.

Willie has toured across the U.S. with The Who and has sung with Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. As the induction program from the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame says: “His live performances are legendary.” His latest studio album, The Day the Earth Stood Still was released in 2021 to universal acclaim. He is currently bringing his dynamic live show and amazing rock and roll band to enraptured audiences worldwide.

In the time since 2015, Flipturn has mushroomed to reaches far beyond the walls of the Fernandina Beach garage they first practiced in. Built up by Dillon Basse (lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass), Mitch Fountain (synth), and Devon VonBalson (drums), the band is walking proof that the DIY approach is still alive and well in the modern music world. With over 40 million streams on Spotify alone, countless sold out shows across the US, and tours with Mt. Joy, Rainbow Kitten Surprise and Wilderado, the band has a lead foot on the gas pedal. This year will see Flipturn joining the prestigious lineups of Bonnaroo, Shaky Knees, SXSW, Hangout, Sunfest, and Treefort. Fans can also look forward to the band’s upcoming debut album and more shows to be announced.

    Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers

For 41 years publications such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, Village Voice, No Depression and many others have hailed him as one of rock & roll’s most talented singer-songwriters.

For over 40 years, Joe Grushecky and his bandmates have been the epitome of blue-collar roots-rock & roll. Born in the coal mining hills surrounding Pittsburgh, Pa., Joe has cut a path of devastatingly honest shows from Pittsburgh to Asbury Park! In the musical tradition of artists like Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, Joe Grushecky & the Houserockers (and before that the Iron City Houserockers) have been making American blue-collar rock that draws from classic rock ‘n roll, Memphis soul, folk songs, electric blues plus a dash of punk, since 1979 when he recorded and released his first album, Love’s So Tough. Albums such as Have A Good Time But Get Out Alive, the classic American Babylon (Produced and joined on the subsequent tour by Bruce Springsteen), East Carson Street, the stunning Somewhere East of Eden, It’s In My Song, More Todays than Yesterdays and the very passionate protest anthem “That’s What Makes Us Great” (again in collaboration with Springsteen) are just a sample of the numerous recordings that present Joe’s very singular, “down home” take on “living, working, family, politics and loving” in America. “In a better world, Joe Grushecky would live in a mansion down the road from Springsteen….Who do you know who has made back-to-back great albums more than 20 years ago and is doing the same thing now. There’s Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young, Springsteen, maybe a few more. He’s on that level.” Joe’s music and his band have certainly stood the test of time.

    MAE: ‘The Everglow’ Anniversary
plus special guests America Part Two

From the moment of their inception, MAE have existed in the cross-sectional spaces of creation. Art and innovation. Intricacy and accessibility. Beauty and chaos. Head and heart. Theirs was a meticulous crafting of soundscapes; painstakingly deliberate and blissfully spontaneous.
This multidimensional juxtaposition formed the friction point that sparked the creation of their now-classic early releases (2003’s Destination: Beautiful and 2005’s The Everglow), as well as the flame that guided their continued exploration throughout the ensuing decade (Capitol debut, Singularity, and the self-released Morning, Afternoon and Evening EPs). Attempts to categorize the band’s sound were made regularly and typically culminated in a hyphenated variation of the nebulous “emo” catch-all. But, the defining thread of MAE’s creation was their uncanny ability to find the heartstrings of the listener and make them resonate with a sympathetic hum.
“When we tour again and tell a new story, we have opportunities we’ve never even considered, even though the band has been called Multisensory Aesthetic Experience for a long time and put out so many releases,” Elkins says.
“You have to meet people where they are instead of asking people to come back to where they’ve been. It’s a theme to the album: Keep moving forward. It’s another reason why the band is doing this. When there’s growth and everything feels new, it’s harder and harder to do that. But it’s always possible. If you keep up with that growth, how can you not have your expectations and mind blown?”

July 14: 87 Nights, Connor Bracken & The Mother Leeds Band

Born from impromptu jam sessions at 87 Morris St. in Charleston, South Carolina, 87 Nights rose to prominence playing house parties and local venues in the spring of 2018. Led by frontman Zane Acord, 87 Nights quickly graduated from the college party circuit, and soon began opening for international acts like Mo Lowda and the Humble. 87 Nights developed a reputation as thrilling live performers, with the chops to play self-penned tunes ranging from the blues to psychedelic rock. Evoking the strutting swagger of the Rolling Stones with I Ain’t Your Man, and hummable melodies of the Beatles on Troublemaker, their self-titled debut album, Eighty Seven Nights, solidified their reputation as one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the Charleston music scene in recent years.

    GOODNIGHT, TEXAS
    plus Jarrod Dickenson

Conventional wisdom says the two front men of a band shouldn’t live on opposite sides of the United States, but that’s never seemed to deter Avi Vinocur and Patrick Dyer Wolf. Goodnight, Texas is a tough-to-define storytelling folk rock band whose strength lies in unexpected sweet spots. Drawing their name from Pat and Avi’s onetime geographic midpoint (the real town of Goodnight in the State of Texas, a tiny hamlet east of Amarillo directly betwixt San Francisco, CA and Chapel Hill, NC), the five-piece band also exists at the center of its songwriters’ contrasting styles — via a 1913 Gibson A mandolin and a 2015 Danelectro Baritone Guitar, at the crossroads of folk and blues and rock ‘n’ roll, in a place where dry wit and dark truths meet hope and utmost sincerity.

July 21: Garcia Peoples & Easy Honey

Formed in New Jersey by guitarists Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki, the band took a few years to find their flying shape, solidifying into a lineup with Danny’s brother Cesar on drums and Derek Spaldo on bass by mid-2016. Ramping up their acceleration around the time of their 2018 Cosmic Cash debut on Beyond Beyond is Beyond Records, they’ve blasted through residencies and new songs and sessions and collaborations, relocating to New York, picking up two new members in keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Pat Gubler and bassist Andy Cush, and leaving a trail of live tapes in their wake. This year, they’ve delivered not one but two new albums for BBiB: the sleek and song-oriented Natural Facts and the sprawling improvisatory opus of One Step Behind. 2019 also saw the first performances by the full Garcia Peoples lineup, a six-person behemoth with Spaldo on third guitar.

With a stash of live recordings accumulating at the Live Music Archive, Garcia Peoples’ music is very much a living entity. Since the release of their previous two albums, songs have started to expand, jam suites have grown, and experiments have been undertaken. The first part of 2019 has seen Garcia Peoples back Philadelphia guitarist Chris Forsyth (an expanded Solar Peoples Band has hit double-drummer overdrive several times now), and joined with guitarist Ryley Walker. They’ve improvised on WFMU, and jammed with the sounds of ocean waves and falling rain at strange late night happenings. Probably something else new and wonderful and weird has happened in the Garciaverse since I wrote this.

Whether or not you thought you knew Garcia Peoples’ music, One Step Behind is something new and beautiful, for new heads and old. No matter where you stand–behind, beyond, or another plane altogether–One Step Behind is ready. For those about to get on the Bus, we salute you.

Opening is Easy Honey. Forged on a Tennessee mountaintop, Easy Honey began molding their irresistible sound and raucous live performance in 2016. With sounds reminiscent of early Brit-rock and a nod to ’90s alt-rock, Easy Honey captures both the playfulness and maturity that accompanies one’s coming of age. Easy Honey’s throwback sense of touch, taste and tone washes over the listener like quicksilver but seizes the audience’s ear like quicksand.

July 28: Adam Ezra Group & Mojohand

Adam Ezra felt alone. It was March of 2020, and as the COVID-19 pandemic began tightening its deadly grip across the United States, the roots rock stalwart found himself forced off the road for the first time in years, stuck at home with a calendar full of cancelled tour dates and no one to perform for. Concerned by the chaos unfolding around him but certain he wasn’t the only one in search of some kind of solace, Ezra decided to pick up his guitar, turn on his phone, and do what he’d always done in times of worry or doubt: play a show.

“I just started livestreaming from my house,” Ezra recalls. “It was a way to connect with people, to feel a little less lost, a little less scared. I played and talked for about an hour, and then at the end of the stream, I told everybody, ‘I’ll come back tomorrow if you come back tomorrow.'”

Ezra kept his promise and then some, returning every single night after that for what he and his fans would eventually come to call The Gathering Series. Interactive and improvisatory, the shows took shape on the fly, drawing on daily life and frequently featuring newly written material and never performed songs from Ezra’s extensive back catalog. Through his own harrowing battle with COVID, a move to the Mojave Desert, a socially distanced summer tour, and even his wedding day, Ezra never missed a performance, broadcasting without fail from wherever he found himself each night at 7 pm Eastern. Driven by a belief that small grassroots communities have the power to impact the world, Ezra – who has gone live daily since March 13, 2020 – has reached an  audience around the world, quite a feat for any artist that stands as a testament, not only to his artistic endurance, but also his ability to provide an accepting and supportive space for newcomers joining his tight-knit community of fans during a time when it’s needed more than ever.

Opening is Mojohand. Mojohand’s modern take on cosmic American music blends together folk, country, blues, and improv.

Steve Forbert & The New Renditions

Steve Forbert’s folk-rock career has spanned four decades and counting. In June 1976, the 21-year-old boarded a train in Meridian, Mississippi bound for New York City, then the epicenter of folk music. His combination of musicianship and authenticity demanded notice. In less than two years, he went from being a street performer and living at the YMCA to filling historic Greenwich Village clubs and signing a major label record contract with Nemperor Records.
From 1978 to 1982, Forbert released four acclaimed albums. Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild wrote that “now or then, you would be hard-pressed to find a debut effort that was simultaneously as fresh and accomplished as Alive on Arrival . . . it was like a great first novel by a young author who somehow managed to split the difference between Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger.”
Forbert’s second studio release, Jackrabbit Slim went RIAA Gold Certified with its Billboard #11 hit “Romeo’s Tune”. Recording success vaulted Steve onto a broader musical stage, touring the U.S. and Europe many times over. Forbert even appeared opposite Cyndi Lauper in her music video for “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” His early accomplishments would be a career for most artists, but he continues to write, record, and perform to this day. His artistic pursuit has resulted in 20 studio albums and numerous live releases, compilations, and accolades. His songs  have been recorded by Keith Urban, Rosanne Cash and Marty Stuart.
Any Old Time, a retrospective of the music of Meridian’s Jimmie Rodgers, received a 2003 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk Album. As Rodgers’ music has inspired Forbert, so has Forbert’s music influenced a new generation of artists.
In 2017, 21 artists paid tribute to Steve by recording a compilation titled An American Troubadour: The Songs of Steve Forbert, further validating his artistic legacy. Forbert’s 2018 memoir Big City Cat: My Life in Folk-Rock serves as a primer for young musicians setting out on their own journeys.
“His perspective on what life was like for a 20-something recently arrived in NYC is sharp. Forbert offers a sparkling observation about the pull of music as excellent as any I have seen,” said Entertainment Today.
Forbert’s latest studio album release The Magic Tree serves as sound track to his memoir. The album rings with the verve and vitality that Forbert’s fans have always come to expect. The Magic Tree underscores what revered critic the late Paul Nelson wrote about Forbert in Rolling Stone almost 40 years ago: “… Nothing, nothing in this world, is going to stop Steve Forbert, and on that I’ll bet anything you’d care to wager.”
Anyone who reviews Steve’s catalogue of music can see the writer in the musician. His songs are as literary as they are musically vibrant. Brutally honest lyrics delivered with sensitivity create an uncommon trust with his listeners. Excelling in every decade of his career, Forbert exemplifies the best of the troubadour tradition.

Between John’s melodic singer-songwriter magnetism, Kevin’s in-your-face delivery, and an overall undeniable groove, this duo is sure to get any audience up and moving. Stylistically reminiscent of Gorillaz and Odelay-era Beck, Little Stranger delivers a fresh take on melodic hip-hop. Every track brings the uniqueness and strangeness that their name implies.

For the past few years, the duo has perfected their live performance by playing over 100 shows per year prior to the coronavirus shutdown. The group also puts a big focus on creating arresting visual experiences through their music videos, their own eccentric television program (LSTV), and in-house graphics. Between their out-of-the-box creative endeavors and an ever-increasing arsenal of new tunes, Little Stranger is poised to make 2022 another slam dunk.

    Juice

“‘Who do we sound like?’ That’s always the hardest question for us to answer” explains Michael Ricciardulli (guitar). “We have so many influences from so many different places. When it all falls together, we end up with songs that don’t sound like anyone else.”
Blending rock, pop, R&B, and hip-hop, Juice embraced the diversity of their signature sound early on. The band – Ben Stevens (vocals), Christian Rose (violin, vocals), Kamau Burton (vocals, acoustic guitar), Daniel Moss (guitar), Michael Ricciardulli (guitar), Rami El-Abidin (bass), and Miles Clyatt (drums) – formed in 2014 in Boston while attending college.
After graduating, the band recorded and released their first professional EP, 2018’s Workin’ on Lovin’. With new music and two old minivans, the band hit the road for an almost non-stop year
and a half of national touring.
Reflecting on their touring and coming to terms with a new phase of life, Juice gathered their collective experiences into their 2019 EP, you are simply magnificent. The project confronts difficult and powerful emotions, including loneliness, lost love, hopelessness and obsession.
Following the release of you are simply magnificent, Juice spent the remainder of 2019 living together as roommates in Queens, New York. Their upcoming single “DiCaprio (Love Me All the Time)” and accompanying video is authentic to that experience. The single features hooks and verses from five of the band members, and gathers inspiration from late ‘90s and early 2000’s pop and hip-hop.

    The Dales

The Dales recall the vintage rock sounds of Laurel Canyon and the 1970’s. The band is anchored by their 3-part harmonies and appreciation for classic songwriting.

Drew Lawrence, a multi-platinum songwriter, (Christina Perri – Jar of Hearts) teamed up with long time musical partner and guitarist Preston Pope to form The Dales. With the 2019 introduction of singer/songwriter Jacqueline Tozzi, The Dales found the missing piece in their creative harmony.

January 2020 The Dales released “Easy Times” an EP which is charting both at triple A and Americana radio. Media play soon followed with features on NPR’s World Café and Acoustic Café as well as TV interviews on NBC and ABC.

“The title track “Easy Times” is a tremendous follow up from their year-old debut LP and has a late 70’s and early 80’s vibe that is both uplifting and Classic.” American Songwriter Magazine

The band spent the winter of 2021/2022 recording their second full length album at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, WA with producer Jerry Streeter (Brandi Carlile). The first single “Glass Wall” will be sent to radio this summer and showcases the band’s evolving sound with hints of soul and r&b.

Summer 2022 will see The Dales on the road again in support of the new album with a full electric, 5 piece, dance ready set!

August 25: Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers, Dry Reef

Joe Hertler & the Rainbow Seekers will make a sprightly young groove doctor out of anyone. With spectacular energy pulsating from every member of the band, the Rainbow Seekers could illuminate the very chambers of Heaven. Lead singer Joe Hertler splashes through lyrical puddles of golden rain, leaving his audience wearing flowery crowns and bubbling smiles. A ride on the Rainbow will take you across the mountains of Motown, through the fjords of folk, over the archipelagos of Americana, and-at last-into a funky firth, where only the fiercest of friendships can be found.

The Rainbow Seekers began their historic quest 8 years ago, revolving around the pure, unadulterated songwriting of their fearless leader, Joe Hertler. Ryan Hoger was the first among the Seekers to find this lonely songsmith and recognize the twinkling magic in his beard. The young boy gave up all his earthly possessions (besides his guitar, of course) and became the first disciple of the Rainbow. With this, the core of the Rainbow was thereby established, and it didn’t take long for the Rainbow Seekers to continue their expansion. Multi-instrumentalist and notable auxiliary percussion maestro Micah Bracken journeyed from the bowels of Atlantis when he heard tell of the Rainbow, and the earth trembled as saxophonist and all-around badass Aaron Stinson descended from Olympus on a golden rainbow of his own. Then came thunder from the depths of space and as it picked up the bass, a soft exhale escaped the lips of every princess within a hundred moons, “Bambis,” they cooed. All the while, on the other ends of the earth, a young boy was hard at work, honing and sharpening his sticks for the day that the Rainbow would come his way, and when it landed at his door, Ryan McMahon climbed aboard.

Since the early days, their quest has brought them across the nation and upon such noble gatherings as Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, and Summer Camp. As you’ll know if you’ve seen the band, seeking the proverbial Rainbow is all about the live performance. “The live show is the purpose of the band. This is why we make music. Playing music is a symbiotic process, the crowd is as much a part of it as the musicians. We give as much energy and love as we can and we can feel that coming from the crowd as well” says Hertler. “We believe that performance is not a High Art operation, and that you should do anything you can to ensure that the crowd is having a good time. From piñatas to confetti, to fog, to flowers, to drum solos, to strobe lights, to Thor, to sword battles-literally anything goes.”

If you’re still reading this, at least one thing is true: The Rainbow Seekers have been waiting for you. If you’ll only let them, they will shake the dust from your wildest expectations. They will roar into your life with rapturous frequencies, exuberant tone, and a joyfulness of purpose that has truly become a rare sight on stage. Join them in their celebration, and they will take you on a never-ending journey to a place you’ll never be able to describe in words.

    Opening is Dry Reef.
